When Life Gives You Tomatoes...

I remember having a garden my whole life. It was a huge, raised garden in our backyard. Beans, corn, radishes, zucchini, squash, carrots, cherry tomatoes, tangelos, raspberries...everything. I love, love, love vegetables, and I attribute it to having fresh vegetables right in my own backyard.

Sometimes, I hated that garden. Like when I would get in trouble, instead of being grounded, I was punished by having to weed the garden. Again, that garden was huge! Not fun!

Although, I loved having a garden growing up, I never really had much motivation to plant my own garden. I don't know why...I guess it seemed like too much work.

Well, in May, we went to the Farmers Market and bought 3 tomato plants and three strawberry plants. Joe planted them and we immediately thought the tomato plants had drowned. It rained so much after they were planted, we thought they were dead for sure. But after a few weeks, it was evident that they had held on. Then a few weeks later, they had grown so tall, that we built a support structure for them. Now, still, they are laying horizontal on the ground, they're so tall and heavy.

The girls have loved going out with their daddy and checking the status of the tomatoes (Our strawberries are failing miserably). Sometimes they stay out there so long, I think they're watching them grow. They water them with their own little buckets and take such good care of the plants. joe treats these plants like a child. As soon as he walks in the door and the girls jump on him, he goes outside and investigates the days growth. He counts the tomatoes and hand waters them. It's sweet. And the girls stay right along side of him the whole time.

The other morning the slider was open and I could hear Gwen outside playing. When I went to check on her, she was over by the "pamatoes" talking to them. She would reach out her little hand and pet the ones she could touch and would speak words of love to each green tomato. It was priceless. "Daddy's pamatoes. Daddy's pamatoes so pretty." (Note the pajamas)
We've started to pick our first red ones, but in about a week we'll have at least a hundred tomatoes fresh off the vine. I feel like I should load them up in a wagon and deliver them anonymously to neighbors and friends. The girls would think that was so fun to leave baskets of tomatoes on doorsteps, ring the doorbell and run away.

Because really, what am I going to do with all these tomatoes? Homemade salsa is about the only thing that sounds appealing at the moment. Anyone want to place an order? Free of charge. They are literally grown with lots of love. Anyone, anyone?

Baby Details

I mentioned here how with both Gabriella and Gwen we framed their ultrasound pictures to tell our family we were pregnant. It's a tradition that I didn't know I was starting when I started it, but now I am so glad I have the pictures of Gabriella holding Gwen's little ultrasound. I love to see just how little Gabs looked when we were planning on having another baby. I love the $1.99 frame from Target the ultrasounds are in. Reminds me of how poor we were in medical school when we bought it. I love that now both my girls can hold that frame with this baby's ultrasound.

Fortunately, we have friends in Radiology who scheduled an informal ultrasound just to be sure that everything was a-okay. We got to see the little one and see that the heart beat was strong and good. Unfortunately, we didn't get any pictures printed off. Because I wanted to remember Gabs and Gwen just as they were when we announced we were pregnant, I had Gabriella draw a picture of the baby. She decided to include me and her as well. So cute! We'll get that ultrasound picture in a few weeks, but I just couldn't wait to take these pictures.

So here are the details of the pregnancy:
I'm 12 weeks along.
I'm due March 12.
We wanted a spring baby and the timing couldn't be more perfect with Joe's insane schedule right now.
I'm feeling horrible.
Horrible.
I haven't done laundry in ten days.
Or stepped foot in a grocery store in about two weeks.
Our refrigerator consists of applesauce and pudding. And bottles of flavored water.
I'm craving salty french fries and greasy pizza-but really that's no different than my normal cravings.
I wake up too many times a night to use the restroom.
I stay awake for hours afterward because I'm just enough hungry I can't get back to sleep and just enough nauseous that I don't want anything to eat.
My house is a disaster.
Make-up? What's that?
The gym? Haven't darken the door of that place in weeks.
I'm crabby.
And exhausted.
And my husband is mostly m.i.a. due to working long hours away from home.
On a happier note, I fit into a pair of jeans I haven't worn in awhile because I'm withering away from not working out and from having no appetite.
And I've read three books.
And I have two perfectly adorable girls and another baby on the way.

I have to include a few more of my favorites from the ultrasound photo shoot. The girls are sitting on the same chair Gabriella sat on. It's from a garage sale from years ago, and even if I get tired of having it my house, I will never get rid of it because of the tradition. The girls were making me laugh and I even teared up watching them giggle and make funny faces...yes, I'm even extra emotional right now. They were just so content sitting with one another-which is shocking. I am so lucky to be a mom. My children mean everything to me and we are so blessed to have another little one coming to join us!

A or B?

Does it look like Gabs and Gwen want: A- A real puppy?

-OR-

B- A real baby?

We think they're pretty excited about getting B!

Passionate

Determined.Willful.Inflexible.Opinionated.
Firm.Fiery.Unwavering.Certain.
Any of those would work to describe my sweet Gwen. I prefer passionate.
This months passion happens to revolve around her wardrobe. A very specific wardrobe.
Exhibit A: "Gwasses"She informs me when I try to wear my glasses, "No, mine gwasses." This week she added a little extra gusto with her passion and broke them. I guess she gets to wear them whenever she wants now.
Exhibit B: "Jammies"Her favorites are the "I wub daddy" jammies- but really all are good. She cries in the morning when I take her jammies off . Lots of screaming and trying to twist away. Not my favorite-she's strong. "I wub jammies"-that's what she says, every morning. She carries her jammies around all day, trying to undress just to get them back on.
Exhibit C: "Fwip Fops"These, by far, are her biggest passion. Gabriella's "fwip fops". She goes everywhere in them. Always on the wrong feet. Always with the wrong toes. Always tripping and falling. Always crying at them. Always getting back up and situating them imperfectly. Always falling again.

We love our hilarious Gwen Gwen. She keeps us laughing. Especially when she's passionate. And that's a good thing.

Lazy Summer Days

We've been busy around here. Traveling and company most of the summer.
Today, no plans.

We got up at 8:00 (and for my girls, that's a new record by at least 2 hours)
I made banana bread in my pajamas.
I didn't do the dishes in my pajamas.
We ate our banana bread on the deck in our glorious 80 degree weather in our pajamas.
Since we were outside, I read in my pajamas while the girls played in their pajamas.
I stepped over five loads of clean laundry that needed to be folded in my pajamas.
I answered the door at 11:00 in my pajamas...luckily the UPS guy had already left.
I assisted-in my pajamas-with tape as the girls packaged and repackaged all their toys in the now empty box that the UPS guy delivered.
I made lunch for the girls in my pajamas.
I put Gwen down for a nap in her pajamas.
I finally did the dishes.
I read some more while Gabriella played miraculously and uncharacteristically with her Little People and Princesses.
I ate lunch...still in my pajamas.
I talked to my out-of-state friend on the phone.
I packed snacks for the pool.
Finally changed everyone out of their pajamas and into swimsuits and headed to the pool.
Played at the pool for 3 hours.
Got dinner on the way home from the pool.
Plopped the girls in the tub and put them right back into pajamas.
Showered myself and put my pajamas back on.
Stepped over the piles of laundry again.
Read a few books to the girls.
Turned on an "end-of-the-day-trying-to-make-it-to-bed-time-show" for the girls.
Talked to Joe and my sister on the phone.
Brushed teeth.
Said Prayers.
Sang songs.
Said goodnight.

If you're thinking, "Wow, Jamie is really lazy", you are absolutely right. Today I was and it was perfect! Perfect because one, we are always in a hurry and out the door and usually out of our pajamas by 9 am. Two, I enjoying cooking way too much to pick up food, I normally don't do that. And three, I never read. Never. So that's caused for a bit of the lazies. And it was perfect for today. A perfectly, overdue lazy summer day.

Well, almost perfect. If only this guy could have been home with us on our lazy summer day-then it would have been perfect. That, and the fact that I had to pick up the garbage can and trash scattered across my driveway for the third time this week from mama raccoon-that wasn't perfect either.

Besides that, it was a great lazy summer day. Here's to making sure the rest of our summer is filled with them!
